The worst was with Gary Cooper in Friendly Persuasion where she didn't even have above the title billing with him (and there were reports that Cooper felt she was too unattractive to play his wife). It wasn't until she made her comeback in the 50s, after her contract with Selznick was over, that her popularity had suffered and she stopped receiving top billing against her male co-stars.
It's quite interesting too that even as a new star in the 40s, Dorothy McGuire was constantly receiving top billing and only took second billing to Gregory Peck for Gentleman's Agreement. However, Dorothy McGuire, who was signed on at the same time as Jennifer Jones, was the main victim and her years of being offscreen after scoring an Oscar nomination for Gentleman's Agreement were because Selznick left her hanging and thus killed any momentum in her career. Shirley Temple's career faded away whereas Joan Fontaine, Vivien Leigh, and Ingrid Bergman were ultimately able to escape Selznick's influence. How once Jennifer Jones came into his life, he neglected all the other actresses signed with him.
